Well I finally got around to deciding how I wanted to edit the photos from that trip a few weeks back to take my uncle home. From time to time I take photos that I just can't figure out how I want them to look. There good photos, but the right color or levels adjustment just drives me up the wall. Often it turns out they needed no adjustment, but in this case I had to go outside of my normal Idea of colors and levels. I must say I am quite happy with the end result.

First up to bat, we have "King Of The Toadstool". This was shot at De Gray lake, a place my Uncle gave me a tip to go see. At the time I did not notice the little guy on top of the mushroom; its little surprises like that, that always get me. This shot was a hard edit because of the overcast lighting that day. The reflectiveness of the mushroom surprised me, and had its colors in the front part thats out of focus blown out. Not to mention I don't like the colors of an overcast day.

Thankfully I have a few extra Picture Styles downloaded from Canon's Japan website. I used 'Nostalgia' with the white balance set all the way up, and saturation turned down a bit. With some slight tweak to the colors and levels in photoshop, and using the new shadows and highlights sliders in Digital Photo Professional, I was able to get this were I wanted it.

The next shot is "Illusions Of Time", the first long exposure waterfall shot I have ever been able to pull off. Back when I got my XTi, I started playing with trying to get a shot like this. It wasn't until much later I learned that you need an ND filter to capture these bad boys. Even kicking the aperture to its narrowest doesn't do the trick, even in overcast skies.

First off, I still don't have an ND filter, but I got lucky and not only was it a really dark day, but this parking lot decoration (dead serious) was back in a corner and not in the line of the sun. Still this shot had to be darkened heavily in DPP. It also took some time to get the right colors as well, once again I very much hate Overcast skies and the colors they give to photos, unless its black and white. I might still edit this one a bit more later on.

The final shot I liked from that day is "Stuck In Forever". As I was coming back through Texarkana, I for some reason decided to exit the highway and head into downtown Texarkana. Turning down some random streets I happened across some amazing old buildings, the likes of which I haven't found in my travels so far. Even though I am not a bit Architecture kinda guy, I was really excited by the location.

Out of all the shots, this was the only one i was happy with the end result. Someone good at architecture would have had a field day there, but I couldn't get the right angles on the shots, not to mention just my sheer lack of experience in this department. Throw in the same lighting conditions I had been dealing with all day (for the last month or so actually) and about 30 minutes of shooting buildings boiled down to this one shot. At first I was going to go for Black and White, but once I put this in color, I fell in love with the look of the windows. This one had some desaturation and of course a bit of levels in photoshop.

Needless to say I enjoyed my trip, and it was good practice even if it is lacking in the amount of photos I brought back. I hope to go back into the state again with more time and sunlight to hit up Hot Springs and a few other interesting places. I also hope to visit other states in the near future, as much as I love Texas, I need new places to inspire me.

Ok, maybe I violated my camera, either way it was some akward stuff. A little lost? It's easier to explain I promise. For some reason here recently I've wanted to try my hand more with architecture photography. It's something I was never really good at, so I figure it will give me a new challenge. Tonight was my first try using the buildings in my home town.

I gotta say It's hard to wrap my mind around shooting just buildings. While my work has never really had many models in it, it's how my mind thinks of photos, and views potential shot locations. So trying to picture photos of just buildings, was well... hard for me. Thankfully I was partially smart and stumbled around some good architecture photographers. Especially photos taken at night. It gave me some ideas as well as framing the shots.

I have to say it could have gone better, there are some good locations to shoot buildings around here, for sure. But alas I came up with nothing stunning to me. I will probably post the results here if any come out decent. I am also starting to play with 'Merge To HDR' in photoshop (shot all the photos tonight bracketed) and should have at least an article covering it up in a few days.

Oh and as for the title of this post; I would pull up to a spot, leave my car running and my windows down, grab the tripod from the backseat, camera from the front, and get to shooting photos. When I was done a few times I would just drop the camera in through the drivers window onto the seat, and open the back door to throw the tripod in. Well once in a while... I kinda forgot that the camera was still in the front seat. I think you can guess what would happen. It was awkward; didn't hurt either of us, just awkward.

Oh and I am still editing the photos from my day in Arkansas. I will make a new post once I have photos to show.

Life can be quite random at times, and the best tip I can give to anyone, is find a way to take the random and often unwanted, and turn it into something you will enjoy. I am in one of those random situations; one of my uncles who at one point a few years back moved into our house for 8 months or so, mooching off us and sleeping in his 79yr old dad's bed.

He is back again, and instead of waiting for him to get money to get a bus ticket back home (map of where that is below) I am taking him home today. That is a 4 hour drive from my house, and that would mean at least 8 hours minimum to get him out of here. Am i mad? Hell no, because I am making it work to my advantage.

I always want to get out of state to take photos in a new place. I usually don't have the time, and when I do have time, I don't have the money. Well I'm getting paid to take him back, and I will be out of state anyways, so on the return trip I will be stopping where I see fit (taking a longer route as well) to take photos. Granted it turns my 4 hour return trip into more then likely a 6 hour return trip, if not longer. But it takes a bad situation into one that I'm excited and happy about.

So expect to see some new photos (hopefully, I could get nothing worth sharing) and a more then likely interesting little story in a day or two.

I find more often then not my big ideas wind up looking and working like something destined for the likes of FailBlog. Today, sadly was one of those days. I would like to show photos from this shoot, or at least of the setup, but the fail was of such a large caliber that... yea were going to leave it at just fail.

I am once again in that phase of wanting to capture water drops. Now that I have a flash (albeit old and crappy) I wanted to try with my new camera again. Last weeks setup worked fairly well, and produced a decent shot. I was still looking for a tray that was black to try it with, so that the drop stands out. I found an old CD spinddle lid. I was doping i could get in close enough not to see the edges.

Well like last time, I set up a Zip-loc bag using (ready to laugh?) scotch tape hanging from the light in the dining room. I then setup my camera on its tripod, with the flash on it, pointed back, with a reflector (white cardboard) to bounce the light back onto the drop. Last time it had went fairly well, but this time... The tape holding the bag failed and dropped the bag into the lid (which i had painted black) which splashed the water on the camera. Needless to say i freaked.

Maybe this is Gods way of saying "You have done enough water drop shots, move on!" Oh well, camera is fine, and i tried my old method a bit just to make me feel a bit better. Let this be a lesson to everyone, be careful working with water and cameras!
